MIT Sloan and Universidad de Chile launch new data analytics certificate program

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 27, 2019––The increasing availability of data provides new opportunities for businesses and organizations. There is, however, a need for more training to fully access all of its benefits. To provide additional education for managers in Latin America and South America, the MIT Sloan School of Management is partnering with Universidad de Chile to design and launch a Data Analytics Certificate. The program is MIT Sloan’s first partnership with a university in Latin America, notably a public university.

As part of our efforts in Latin America, first with the MIT Sloan Latin America Office, and now with this certificate program, MIT and MIT Sloan are making inroads in the region with the goal of helping to create a better future through ideas and innovation,” says MIT Sloan Assistant Dean of Global Programs David V. Capodilupo.

Lee Ullmann, senior director of the MIT Sloan Latin America Office, adds, “This is a tremendous opportunity for MIT Sloan to make a bigger impact in the region by providing high-level training in data analytics. This is an important part of economic growth, government transparency, and efficiency for all sectors.”

The new program starts May 10, 2019, with up to 40 students attending classes in Santiago at Universidad de Chile. In January of 2020, students will take classes for two weeks at MIT Sloan in Cambridge, MA.

Faculty from Universidad de Chile and MIT Sloan will focus on data analytics in a diversity of areas such as healthcare, retail, public policy, mining, banking, and telecommunications. Course modules include: Introduction to Data Science and Big Data, the Fundamentals of Data Mining and Machine Learning, Data-driven Decision Making, and Real-life Applications and Case Studies.

Graduates of the program will receive a certificate from Universidad de Chile. Graduates will also receive a certificate from MIT Sloan for the MIT Immersion Program in Data Analytics.

The certificate program is part of MIT Sloan's commitment to supporting the advancement of management education and practice in Latin America. Founded in 2013, the MIT Sloan Latin America Office strives to develop and nurture meaningful activities throughout the region, such as faculty and student visits, admissions recruiting events, and conferences. In 2017, it organized a conference called “Strategic Analytics: Changing the Future of Healthcare," which highlighted the many ways in which Big Data will lead to important medical advances, lower healthcare costs, and address inequalities between public and private healthcare systems. Prior conferences have focused on topics including: China, social impact, technological innovation, entrepreneurship, and energy.
